Unification in the Description Logic EL

The Description Logic EL has recently drawn considerable attention since, on the one hand, important inference problems such as the subsumption problem are polynomial. On the other hand, EL is used to define large biomedical ontologies. Unification in Description Logics has been proposed as a novel inference service that can, for example, be used to detect redundancies in ontologies. The main result of this paper is that unification in EL is decidable. More precisely, EL-unification is NP-complete, and thus has the same complexity as EL-matching. We also show that, w.r.t. the unification type, EL is less well-behaved: it is of type zero, which in particular implies that there are unification problems that have no finite complete set of unifiers.Comment: 31page

Founded in the same year as the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949, Fraunhofer started out as a small office with just three employees. Today, 72 individual institutes and research units carry out Fraunhofer research projects at locations throughout Germany and abroad, in addition to the work of 25,000 scientists and engineers who are granted an annual research budget totalling 2.3 billion euros. Fraunhofer undertakes applied research that drives economic development and serves the wider benefit of society. Its services are solicited by customers and contractual partners in industry, the service sector, and public administration. As Europe’s largest Research and Technology Organisation (RTO), how does Fraunhofer meet the challenges of Open Science

The recent Open Data project “FORDATIS aims to establish a research data repository not only under the FAIR principles, but also that is well-connected to both the publication repository and internal data management systems. In this presentation, “Fordatis - a DSpace Solution” s the issues of customization and implementation of an open access research data repository is discussed. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s research activities are conducted by 72 institutes and research units spread throughout Germany. As all 72 institutes have their own requirements, needs and they’re focused on different research activities, the challenge for the team working on the Fordatis project was to develop a solution that could collect different use cases, address the various needs and meet the diverse requirements. The presentation will highlight their requirements and use cases, why they decided on DSpace, how they customized DSpace to meet their needs, the lessons they learned and future plans. The one-hour webinar will conclude with a question answer session
